Childbirth Delivery Methods

Childbirth is a unique and personal experience; no two deliveries are ever the same. You can customize your birth plan by choosing a delivery method that matches your personal style and your baby’s needs.

A doula, or birth companion, is a non-medical person who may assist a woman before, during and after childbirth. Doulas typically provide physical assistance and emotional support. Some may have training through a formal organization, such as DONA International or CAPPA, among others.

Epidural anesthesia is the most popular method of pain relief for women in labor and is chosen by more than 50 percent of women in childbirth. An epidural uses a local anesthesia to block pain in a particular region of the body; in this case, the lower region. The goal of an epidural is to provide pain relief rather than a complete lack of feeling. That way, you’ll still be able to move your legs or get up and walk around with a little help and support. Talk with your obstetrician/gynecologist if you think you might want an epidural.

The Bradley Method®

The Bradley Method teaches families how to have a natural birth using simple techniques that work with the body to reduce pain and make labor more efficient. The 12-week course covers prenatal nutrition and exercise, relaxation, birth plans and more.

Vaginal Birth After Cesarean Section (VBAC)

A cesarean section is surgery to deliver a baby through incisions made in the mother’s abdomen and uterus. Some women who have previously had a cesarean section may be able to have a vaginal birth. Talk with your OB-GYN if you are interested in finding out more about vaginal birth after cesarean section.

Maternity and Childbirth Classes

Medical City Healthcare hospitals offer a wide range of classes and support groups for pregnant moms, dads, same-sex partners, siblings and grandparents. From prepared childbirth class to breastfeeding class and prenatal and mommy and baby yoga to car seat safety and infant CPR, the hospitals of Medical City Healthcare offer many classes and programs for education and support before and after your baby is born.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Advanced care is available for high-risk pregnancies and deliveries. Our hospitals offer specialized care for babies born prematurely or with serious medical conditions, including a Level IV NICU, the highest level of care for newborns available in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, at Medical City Dallas.

Highest Levels of Neonatal Care

Delivering your baby at a Medical City hospital can give you much-needed peace of mind concerning the health and safety of your infant. The neonatal intensive care units at Medical City Healthcare hospitals provide advanced diagnostic, therapeutic and surgical care for infants requiring the care of a Level III or Level IV NICU — the highest levels of neonatal care available.

One of the greatest stresses faced by parents is having to leave their sick baby in the NICU. Now, parents can access a live video stream that enables them to see their baby in real time, 24/7, via a secure web address accessible from laptops, tablets, desktop computers and smartphones.

The expert neonatologists at Medical City hospitals offer TeleNICU consulting services to physicians at smaller hospital nurseries or neonatal intensive care units whose patients are in need of a higher level of care. These valuable services help reduce the need for infant transfers and can lead to improved overall outcomes for the tiniest patients.

Labor and Delivery Quality Recognition

Medical City Healthcare hospitals seek to provide the highest level of patient-centered care from doctors and nurses who are truly committed to you and your baby’s health. We are proud to have achieved the following quality designations.

Blue Distinction® Specialty Care Designation

Blue Distinction+ Centers are healthcare facilities that display expertise in providing quality specialty care safely, effectively and cost efficiently. Blue Cross Blue Shield’s Blue Distinction Centers+ Maternity Care designation allows prospective parents to identify hospitals that offer high quality and value for their maternity care needs.

Texas Ten Step Designation

The Texas Ten Step Program, developed by the Department of State Health Services (DSHS) in collaboration with the Texas Hospital Association, recognizes hospitals that have implemented Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding practices. According to the DSHS, breastfeeding has many health benefits for mothers and babies. Texas Ten Step facilities support and encourage new moms in their breastfeeding goals.

Skin-to-Skin Contact

The best place for your healthy, full-term baby is on your chest, next to your heart. Medical City Healthcare hospitals recognize the numerous documented benefits associated with immediate skin-to-skin contact, including regulating body temperature and heart rate, controlling anxiety and blood sugar and increasing the chance of successful breastfeeding.
